Computer memory is commonly referred to as the storage of the computer. A computer memory basically means various devices that are used to store data. The computer memory can be in the form of some computer components, devices, or recording media that are used to store data for some period of time. In simple words, computer memory is an important way to retain information for the computer to process.
In fact, it’s one of the fundamental components of all computers. Together with the CPU and its processor, it refers to all models of modern computers that were launches since 1940s. In contemporary computers, a computer memory refers to a form of semiconductor storage. The semiconductor storage is popularly known as the RAM (random access memory). Sometimes, it also refers to some other forms of temporary storage mediums. More commonly, the computer storage in today’s times refer to mass storage devices such as the optical discs, magnetic storage devices such as the hard drives, and some other types of storage mediums that are used to store data for permanent usage.
During the initial period, the computer memory or the storage was categorized in two types, primary storage and secondary storage. The contemporary definitions have changes marginally. The primary storage is only accessible by the CPU that reads the instructions and executes them. The secondary memory is not directly accessible by the CPU but it is permanent in nature and holds the date even when the power is switched off. In any case, both types of PC memory are important.
